HOLY THURSDAY
On the sacred occasion of Holy Thursday, the Cathedral of Christ the King in Ndola was filled with reverence as Rt. Rev. Dr. Benjamin Phiri, the Bishop of Ndola, led the faithful in commemorating the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with his disciples. This solemn mass holds profound significance in the Christian tradition, marking the institution of the Holy Eucharist and the priesthood, as well as the act of humility demonstrated by Jesus through the washing of his disciples’ feet. In a reenactment of this symbolic gesture, Bishop Phiri, following his homily, humbly washed the feet of members of the congregation. His sermon resonated deeply, reminding us of the essence of Christ’s teachings – service and humility. He emphasized that our titles, qualifications, gifts, and talents are bestowed upon us, but they do not define our worth. Rather, it is our duty to employ them in the service of others, recognizing the inherent dignity of every human being as an image of God. The bishop’s admonition to serve one another with humility serves as a poignant reminder of our shared humanity and the imperative to treat each individual with respect and dignity, irrespective of social status. As we reflect on the events of Holy Thursday, let us carry forth the lessons of humility and service into our lives, embodying the spirit of Christ’s love and compassion.
