St. Maria Theresia Catholic Church, Kasamba

St. Maria Theresia Catholic Church, Kasamba

Nestled in the serene countryside, about 15 kilometers from Luanshya, lies the sacred outstation of Ibenga Parish—St. Maria Theresia. A place of breathtaking beauty and profound spirituality, it has become a sanctuary where the faithful testify to miracles, healings, and even visions of the Blessed Mother. This holy site, resting at the foot of the “Hill of Wonders,” has drawn pilgrims from across and beyond the Archdiocese of Ndola. Named by Fr. Angelo Panzica, who documented its significance in a book, the hill is adorned with uniquely shaped rocks that resemble people and animals, a natural wonder that captivates visitors. The spiritual aura of St. Maria Theresia has inspired the formation of the “Children of Mary”, a devoted group clad in green and white, uniting believers from various lay groups and even beyond the archdiocese. These faithful do not gather merely to witness miracles but to deepen their devotion to God through Mary’s intercession. In a gracious event, the Archbishop of Ndola, Most. Rev. Dr. Benjamin Phiri, along with his entourage—including the Vicar General, Very Rev. Fr. Lewis Mutachila; the Pastoral Director, Rev. Fr. Ephriam Mapulanga; and the Liturgical Manager, Rev. Fr. Francis Mulenga—visited this sacred site. They were warmly welcomed by the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Barnabas Kasonde, who has played a vital role in nurturing the faith of the people at this holy place. The Archbishop and his delegation climbed the revered hill and celebrated Mass at its peak, joined by hundreds of faithful. In his homily, Archbishop Phiri urged pilgrims to seek true conversion, emphasizing that faith should not be reduced to mere attraction to miracles. He reminded them that St. Maria Theresia is a place of prayer, not a commercial venture, and that the faithful should come to worship and grow spiritually rather than simply seek signs and wonders. After Mass, the Archbishop took time to pray for the sick, bringing comfort to many. He also blessed the water, which was then used to sanctify the hill, the grotto with the statue of Mother Mary, and the Stations of the Cross marked on the hill. St. Maria Theresia remains a place where heaven touches earth—a beacon of faith, prayer, and divine grace. Those who visit return renewed in spirit, carrying with them the profound peace and blessings found in this sacred sanctuary.
