Blessing and Consecration of St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church
On February 22, 2025, St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church, an outstation of St. Nicholas Parish in Ndeke, celebrated the blessing and consecration of its newly built church building. The momentous occasion began with the official handover of the church keys. Zambezi Portland Cement Limited, the main donor, first presented the keys to Senior Chief Chiwala, who then handed them over to the Archbishop of Ndola Archdiocese, Most Rev. Dr. Benjamin Phiri, JCD. The Archbishop formally opened the church, marking the beginning of the Eucharistic celebration. The Mass was celebrated by Archbishop Phiri, who was warmly welcomed by the parish priest, Rev. Fr. Grievance Mulenga. This new church was built to replace the original structure, which was located in a waterlogged area prone to flooding during the rainy season. In response to this challenge, Chief Chiwala lobbied Zambezi Portland Cement Limited, which generously constructed not only the church but also a caretaker’s house, church offices, and an ablution block on land allocated by the chief. Additionally, a borehole was installed to provide clean water for the church and two neighboring churches. During his homily, Archbishop Phiri spoke about true conversion and holy living, strongly cautioning against the practice of witchcraft and the mixing of Christianity with superstitious beliefs. The Mass was filled with joy, featuring vibrant singing from the choir, dancing by the Stellas and Ba Buomba, and a spirited march by the Xaverians. At the end of the celebration, the Archbishop expressed gratitude to all collaborators, including the management of Zambezi Portland, Chief Chiwala, the District Commissioner of Masaiti, and the Parish Priest and parishioners of St. Nicholas Parish, for their collective efforts in making the new church a reality. The event concluded with the release of white doves into the air, symbolizing peace and unity and a symbolic tree-planting ceremony at the church entrance, representing new life and growth.
