ASH WEDNESDAY MASS
On February 5, 2025, the Catholic faithful gathered at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Ndola to mark Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. The solemn celebration was presided over by Most Rev. Dr. Benjamin Phiri, Archbishop of Ndola. Ash Wednesday has been observed in the Catholic Church for centuries as a day of repentance, fasting, and prayer. It marks the start of the 40-day Lenten journey, preparing believers for Easter. The imposition of ashes on the forehead, accompanied by the words “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return”, reminds the faithful of their mortality and need for God’s mercy. During his homily, Archbishop Phiri urged the congregation to fast with sincerity—not just from food, but from anything they love. He emphasized that Lent is not a time for saving money by cutting down expenses but rather an opportunity to help those in need. He encouraged the faithful to look for ways to serve others, whether by feeding the hungry or assisting families struggling with school fees. The Archbishop also reminded the faithful that true repentance is not about outward displays of sorrow, such as tearing clothes, but about opening their hearts to God. He called on all to embrace Lent as a season of genuine conversion and transformation. The celebration concluded with the blessing and distribution of ashes, marking the beginning of a sacred time of prayer, penance, and renewal in Christ.
